OUR STORY

Body Metrics Australia is a research project investigating the body shapes and measurements of Australians using safe, non-invasive 3D body scanning technology. The study aims to improve clothing fit, sizing systems and product development by creating a better understanding of the diversity of Australian body shapes. This research forms part of the Master of Fashion (Entrepreneurship) at RMIT University.

By participating, you are helping to build evidence that can support a more inclusive and sustainable Australian fashion industry. All participation is voluntary, and your data is collected with informed consent, securely stored, and de-identified to protect your privacy.

HELENA STEPHAN

With over 10 years of experience in the Australian fashion industry, the researcher has specialised in product development, garment fitting, and production management across a range of apparel categories. This practical industry expertise has provided a strong understanding of sizing, fit consistency, and the challenges associated with current apparel sizing systems.

Combining industry knowledge with academic research through the RMIT Master of Fashion (Entrepreneurship), the researcher is investigating how anthropometric data and 3D body scanning technology can support more accurate, inclusive, and standardised sizing for the Australian apparel industry.

Our goal is to develop a comprehensive analysis of Australian body measurements and compare these findings with the sizing standards currently used by Australian apparel brands. By identifying similarities, differences and inconsistencies across existing size charts, this research will assess whether a more consistent, evidence-based approach to clothing sizing is achievable.
 

The findings aim to support the development of improved sizing benchmarks that better reflect the diversity of the Australian population. Ultimately, this research seeks to contribute to a more standardised sizing framework that improves garment fit, enhances the customer experience, and helps reduce returns and textile waste across the Australian fashion industry.
